Strange But True Cartoons

Toon Ads - "True Fish Tails"

I had a nearly-brilliant idea that newspapers could sell more ads, if they were contained within a related cartoon, which would naturally attract the reader’s eye.  Unfortunately, I greatly underestimated the greed of advertising salespeople, who would rather sell a large ad than a small one.  Anyway, it made for an amusing distraction that entertained my own bizarre sense of humor!

"Mr. Proper"

I had always been intrigued by European-style cartoons, which sometimes had little or no dialog, so readers of all languages could understand them.  My love for Monty Python inspired me to develop a character that could have fit right in with their zany skits.  Later, the British comedian Rowan Atkinson embodied the character of “Mr. Proper” as his own “Mr. Bean.”

Grass Roots

The Coastal Post went monthly in 1992, and include more pages, which presented more space for cartoons.  I was developing a strong sense of environmental activism at the time, which allowed for some impassioned creations that reflected the spirit of West Marin.  (The originals are lost to posterity, so I had to scan these from the original newsprint, which adds to their authenticity… I think.)
