Research Cartoons

In the new millennium, I began working in the research ethics and regulatory field.  I was officially the administrator for an “institutional review board,” or IRB, but practically speaking, I was more like a court jester.  My goal was to create funny drawings that gave insight to investigators and research staff about the principles of protecting human subjects.  The technique was to show people the right way to do this, by making fun of those doing it entirely wrong.  These “educational cartoons” were published in a variety of ways: in calendars, newsletters, presentations, and textbooks all around the world; in several languages.  They even made it into the hallowed halls of universities, major hospitals, and government agencies like FDA and NIH.  Click one of the images below to enter a previously under-lampooned universe, where the inhabitants take themselves WAY too seriously!
